Responsibilities: The tasks you will perform as a first-year Public Ally can vary depending on where you are placed. It may include things like developing and evaluating programs, reaching out to the community, or assessing community needs. You will also need to attend three retreats, plan and carry out a Team Service Project to benefit a nonprofit and the community, take part in National Days of Service, attend bi-weekly workshops for leadership and professional training, meet monthly with your assigned team for training, goal-setting, and team-building, reflect on your experiences, and present on the impact of your service during End of Year Presentations.
Program Details:
The program runs from September to June each year. As a Public Ally, you will commit to serving the community for 10 months, totaling 1700 hours. During this time, you will receive a living stipend of $13,500. The work locations are spread across the Phoenix Metro area, and you will typically work a minimum of 43 hours per week, including time at the nonprofit organization, attending trainings and professional development sessions, and participating in community service projects. Every other Friday, you will have training sessions with other Public Allies at different locations in Phoenix, and some Saturdays may be required for service projects. Your supervisors will be the Public Allies Program Manager and the Site Organization Supervisor.
Minimum Requirements:
To be a first-year Public Ally, you need to have a strong desire to serve the community and a commitment to continuous learning. Good interpersonal and communication skills, both with individuals and in larger groups, are important. You must be able to pass a background check and obtain an AZ DPS level one fingerprint clearance card. Additionally, you need to be 18 years or older by the program start date in September, be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident, have a High School Diploma or G.E.D. by the program start date, and have access to reliable transportation (although not all positions require a driver’s license).

If eligible, you may receive assistance with childcare expenses. Upon successfully completing your service, you will be awarded an Eli Segal Education award of $5775. You will also have access to health care coverage and may be eligible for student loan forbearance (for certain types of loans). Training will be provided, and your schedule may have some flexibility based on the organization where you are placed.
